Old Backlash Cover

I just wanted to clarify something I said last week. I'm not mad at WS for closing shop, actually I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner, low sales will do that. I was just sad to see it go. And when I said "Don't change stuff just change stuff." "Lets give him black hair because it cooler" is what I'm talking about. I understand that to get WS to fit into DC (if that is indeed what they do,) some changes are going to be made. I'd love to be a part of restarting the old WS if they go that route but I also understand some new blood and a fresh look might be in order. I have actually toyed with the idea of restarting Backlash before. We got stuck doing some things with the character I wasn't happy about, because well, BL wasn't a major player, so we sort of got tossed to the side, universe wise. What am I talking about? That Diaz guy from the first Kindred (BloodMoon) was originally supposed to be Grunge's father form Gen 13, but after we drew 2 issues of Kindred it was decided to change him to someone else. For a time BL was Zealots son, which is why we brought the Kheribum stuff in, when the powers that be decided to make Winter from StormWatch Zealots son we had to scramble like we did with Diaz to come up with something to cover our asses. These things happen of course so I'd LOVE to get a chance to do it right, or at least righter;) And Wildcore... we'll just forgot about that shall we;) And I'm still not quite sure what we were doing with Taboo's outfit. I think that was an attempt to bring in some WetWorks elements. It's been awhile.

Of course lightning doesn't always strike twice and it might be a horrible idea!

Coming Soon! Bigg Robot!

Just got the OK to post this. Derek Ruiz's Bigg Robot. I won't say anything else, since I don't really know much more. But I'm sure Derek will be by to answer questions and such! There be monsters here!

Backlash Version 3?

With all the talk about the lose of WildStorm (I still remember trying to come up with the name for it. We did try for First Light as we were always up so fricken late;)) and the talk of possibly rebooting the characters or at the very least plopping them into DC proper. I thought a bit about Backlash and what I'd like to see done with him. I had an idea about that a few years ago so I sort of cheated, but here's a first idea sketch I did up yesterday. Please remember this means NOTHING. I have not talked to anyone at DC about this, it's just wishful thinking.

Anywho, I think it might be a tad complicated, I have a slightly more simplified sketch on the drawing board that I might get to today, but I wanted to do a Kevin picture as well so we'll see.

Almost Sunday, I feel... dirty;)

If only this wasn't true. I know, I know, that somebody is their 'god', but damn their god seems to think it's OK for his minions to touch anyone they want, especially kids. You'd figure he'd, you know STOP it if he did have a problem with it. But I guess not cause it just KEEPS happening. Free will be damned, those kids don't seem to have it.

I Think It's About Time for This Song Again

This is dedicated to the people who made working conditions so unbearable that I had to quit or have a brain aneurysm, then had the gall to offer me $36 a page for the eleven pages I had previously done, as a 'kill fee' (read: sop for their conscience.)

Really, now, what did you think I would say?

A few more Jade sketches.

What does it mean? I can't say yet, soon, but not yet. But who are the characters that aren't finished behind them? Any guesses?

Best,

Brett

Backlash mourns, Taboo... not so much.

I received a bit of bad news yesterday, Wildstorm will cease to be at the end of December. Go here for the details. While WS and I didn't always see eye to eye, a good part of my life happened there. First pro work, met Jess there, learned the ins and outs of comic production. So it's with mixed feelings I write this, sad to see it go, hoping that the old WS might see a resurrection in the DC universe. Hoping that whoever does something with Backlash doesn't change stuff just to change stuff.

Good bye Wildstorm, you will be missed.

Character Sketch

Well I finished the PowerGirl/ Huntress story yesterday. So now I'm just waiting for the Larfleeze script and another script for another one shot. I wish I could post some art but I can't until it ships or they post it on one of the news sites, which they might not do. So I'll try to do a few sketches this week. And maybe finish up that robot design I did. But for now, a character design I drew a month ago.

Garrrrr!

Today be Talk Like a Pirate Day, so get to talking like a Pirate or I'll be keel hallin' ya! Arrrgh!

It's Sunday, can you smell the Nazis?

I thought this was a dead subject, but it was brought up again so here are a few handy dandy things about Nazis and religion and Darwin:

I guess they weren't following Darwin after all... like I've said a hundred times. Why bring this up again? Well Sith Lord... I mean Pope Whatever the who gives a fuck, has decided that Atheists and Nazis are the reason for the Third Reich. Let's pull a Bush the Second and fear monger our way out of all those nasty molestation rumors and convictions.

So did Hitler's religion make him 'evil'? I'll say not really. Sure there was a TON of antisemitism around thanks to religion, but I doubt religion is the cause of the Nazis. Hitler was just a dick, it happens. But why post this? Because I'm sick of hearing how a non religion influences people when there is NOTHING there to influence. It's like saying I killed your Aunt because the air offended me.

And before I hear this, Catholics are still Christians, just like Sunni's are still Muslims, and the Irish are still white;)

Larfreeze Christmas Special

Colors by Andrew Dalhouse

Go here for all the details! Please note this is NOT from the book, just me and Andrew having a bit of fun:)

EDIT: OK, I was informed today that this IS now from the book:)

Merry X-mas,

Brett

Jade from GL Corps and the JSA

Just a quick sketch, working on another 8 pager, a little past the halfway point. Trying to take it easy today, that con just wasted me. Any who, felt like I lost 'it' yesterday ('it' as in my drawing mojo, not my mind. I lost that years ago!) so I drew this up to sort of keep me loose.

It's my crap I'll burn it if I want to!

Over on Pharyngula there is an excellent post on this whole Koran burning thing. By giving in to these ultra religious monsters we are given them power over us. I had thought about burning the Koran AND Bible if this guy did it, but then I'd have to waste time buying the damn things. I do have another idea, draw up the major religious figures and then burn the art. I wonder if they'd get more pissed off than normal... The problem? I'd have to waste my time drawing them, although Buddah would be fun:)

Go read the article. It's not real blaspheme, just common sense.

Me at the con!

One of the guys at the Urban Myth table asked me if they could do a sketch... I thought they said for me but it turns out it was OF me. Looks good and I'm grumpy!

Thanks Joey!

White Lantern and more con news.

Colors by Andrew Dalhouse.

So yeah, I'm staying home today to take care of Jess and the Dogs, so no show:( I did just about make back what I spent on prints so that's cool. Thanks to those that came out, Jade and her friend (who I can't remember her name, not to worry I'm HORRIBLE with names.) We had a nice chat, I did draw her a sketch, but it was a dinosaur so don't feel bad;)

I officially broke my no super heroes fast on Friday. Started page 1 of a Huntress/ PowerGirl 8 pager for Superman/ Batman. I'll try to finish that off today since I'll be home now.

As for what's left of the prints, I have to send off some to Oezden with all the original art he got and then Andrew, who printed them up for me, forgot to keep some for himself. So, I have to get some out to him. I'll be sending off the rest to Derek Ruiz so he can take them to the big shows he goes to so look for them there.

Best,

Brett

Sunday of conversions and a bit of con news.

I guess those pesky Mormons can't have al the fun! Convert your dead friends to the totally coolest non religion around! Check it out here!

Found via Pharyngula.

Not sure if I'm going to make it back to the con today, Jess hurt her neck/back and can't do very much so I can't leave her for long periods of time. I'll see how she feels and decide then (plus that AC is KILLIN' my lungs, how do people live like that! I felt a cold down to my bones... I had to go outside an warm up!)

Ben,

If I don't show up, send me your address and I'll send you something to ink;)

Ep Con tomorrow and Sunday

Colors by Andrew Dalhouse.

OK, I'll be there (hopefully, the car has been trouble lately) around 10 tomorrow til 6 and then 12 to 4 on Sunday. I've got some small prints to sell off so come on over. I'm supposed to do a panel at some point, no idea when, or if my voice will hold out for that. So stop by and ask lots of questions about whatever!

Am I a THIEVING FOOL!?!

I was sent this by Derek Ruiz yesterday:

Swipe File: Ultimate X Vs Frankenstein

By Art Adams

So whatcha think? I have previously posted this image twice, once when it was solicited a few months ago and before that, when I drew the pencils. You can see that here. I believe that says July 2009 on the post;)

Just a note, Art Adams is the base style of my art. His was the art that got me into comics. If I would have 'swiped' it would have been an homage, with an after Art Adams somewhere on the image. Why am I slightly annoyed by this? Because I HATE swiping. It's the whole reason I left DA and to be accused is just really offensive to me. You can hate my work, I don't really care, but to be accused of stealing just gets my panties in a twist.

Also, this was interesting: Dinosaur Tracking.

I did email IDW about Jurassic Park, I was told it "was all booked up." So no plans to work on JP.

Also, 4 pages of Kevin of the Ape Men art over on Art Evolved. Down at the bottom.

Brett

New project?

OK, I talked to the Editors. I can 'announce' it. I just finished off an 8 page story for DC, I drew the Scarecrow story for Untold Tales of Blackest Night. I can safely say no superheros... yet. I'm supposed to be doing something else for Superman/ Batman but it's not either of those guys. I'm just waiting on the script for that should be here later today or tomorrow:) So yes, I will be venturing back into superheros, I needed a break from all the approval stuff that goes on with the licensed books. I'll still be doing Anita Blake covers and some other stuff since right now I'm just doing temp work. I don't know if it'll be a total emersion thing or not.

All the sketches? Well, I'm a bit rusty at the superhero stuff so it's a bit of practice:)

Robot Sketch for Derek

This is the base sketch for the robot head I posted the other day. I was hoping to get to it last night, but it was so fricken hot I decided to watch TV... or at least the what I  had on the DVR. That didn't work out so well as there is a bad spot on the drive which OF course happened on the new Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town section... IFC CHANGED the name of the program so my DVR missed the first of last Friday's episodes and then this! I am not a happy camper:(

My 'Deconversion' Story

This is basically (what I can remember anyways!) my trip from religion to atheism. It's by no means spectacular and I spared you all the sciency crap, if you are curious look it up like I did!

I was born into the Irish Catholic religion. When I was old enough, my father sent me off to CCD (essentially bible study for kids, it fricken SUCKED!!! They held it on Saturday morning!!!!) I went there for 4 years every Saturday during the school year. I got my first communion (eating of the Jezit! Tastes like styrofoam or a stale rice cake.) We had to memorize prayers, we were recanted the tales of the Bible as true, yadda, yadda , yadda.

Why am I telling you this? Well to give you a bit of background. I was parietal immersed in as a child. I was taken to church every Sunday or Saturday, depending. Eventually my Father stopped going, not exactly sure why but I finally had my Saturdays and Sundays free. No more St. Benadict's for me!

Through all this I still believed in Adam and Eve, Noah, the flood and Jesus. I mean I was told this from childhood, we even had one of the them fancy Jesus stable things at Christmas, we were pretty typical for lapsed Catholics at the end. I never really thought about evolution, even though I had a love of dinosaurs when I was younger. Everything had it's place and I questioned none of it… Until 9th grade History.

In our first week of High School our 9th grad World History teacher had us watch some old movies (on the reel!) about the evolution of humans. I was HOOKED. I loved it. The Leaky's, Lucy, Turkana boy, Neandertals!!!! But there was a problem… these things didn't look like modern humans and they were older, FAR older than we were taught in CCD. Hmmmm… what to do? Well I sort of switched Adam and Eve to these more primitive models, Lucky=Eve, but what about evolution? Well, that's just how god worked, obviously. Problem solved. This how I proceeded for the next 4 years until college and a good bit after. When I started working for Wildstorm, I first heard the term Atheist and found out what the heck it ment (I grew up pretty sheltered obviously!) How could someone NOT believe in god? It sort of bothered me because even though I wasn't a practicing Christian I still believed, I sort of relegated the Genesis stuff to old fairy tales but the rest was true, wasn't it? I think I sort of became a deist after that. I pictured god sort of starting things off and then walking away and coming back to check up on us every now and then. I never really thought about Jesus anymore, if we were all gods children why was he so special? Should he love us just as much?

At this point I was picking up LOTS of dinosaur and history like books, Jurassic Park had just come out and there were TONS of these things. I read a bunch. But it wasn't until 1997 or so that I was reading this human evolution book that I finally just couldn't  keep buying into religion. The more books and things I read the more it just didn't make any sense. Evolution was true we had testable methods, we had direct evidence, transitional forms, DNA! But what about god? Was there room for him? I sort of became and agnostic at that point, but that was short lived. The more research I did on religion the more it just seemed ridiculous and actually pretty evil. I didn't really believe any of it anymore and that seemed to make sense. It was all lies that we were told as children to get us to behave, to control us, to take away our freedom ( you must say that in a Scottish accent!) But the final nail in the coffin goes to Steve Miller. He's the guy you can thank for me 'outing' myself as an Atheist. Thanks Steve!

I had started posting something about evolution on our website message boards and Steve came out of the woodwork with the CRAZIEST stuff I ever heard! I still think he was trying to pull my leg with it! Homo eructs was really just an old human! The bible says people lived to be 900 back then! Lightning changes the dates on fossils!  In that heated 'debate' I think I first said there was no god. and I haven't really looked back since! Science and basic reasoning skills showed me that just because something is old (traditional even!) that that doesn't mean it's true. As the years go by I see more and more evidence that there is no god, no religion is true, that people are simply just wasting their time for nothing. It's a bit sad, but it is their time, we can't all be super cool Atheists! ( Only the cool kids, even Stephan Hawking agrees!))

That's it for this week.

The Fools!

Homeopaths have just recently discovered what we Atheists have known for years. The best form of contraception is of course BABIES! It's all explained here with totally accurate scientifical testing, really! These homeopaths would never lie! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean?

The Red Pyramid... sketches.

Most of you know I'm a big Percy Jackson fan, so when the author of that series did a new series called The Red Pyramid I was all over it! It has lots of action/adventure and mythology! I don't really care that they are young adult, like the Harry Potter books these are fun for everyone. So while I was workless I drew up some sketches that I forgot to post!
