Happy Birth Day Freddie!

Happy B-day Freddie! He would have been 65. Damn that guy was a great singer.

Best,

Brett

  1. Yeah, the guy was a great singer. I always get annoyed when I see people who will not listen to the guy because he happened to be gay.

I was sitting in college one day, and a group sitting close to me were having a conversation. Some of them had gone to a costume party the night before, and one of them came into the college with black facepaint still on his face from the night before.
He had gone to the party dressed as Freddie M, but had not taken a shower after the night before. Hence the paint.
As they were talking, they asked him who he had gone dressed as. 'Freddy Mercury' he responded.
'Who's Freddie Mercury?' a few asked. 'A gay guy' one answered.
Nothing about his songs, his music, his life, his legendary work with Queen and his solo work, and his musical legacy to those who came afterwards.
Kurt Kobain young people know, but mention Freddie Mercury, and alot of them will display a blank stare.
Musically challenged or musically ignorant, I don't know?

I even mentioned a movie I enjoy, Ghost starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, to a young woman 'bout a year ago, and she had never heard of it. It was during a conversation about Dirty Dancing and Swayze. I felt like I was talking Klingon.

By the way, google have a brilliant 'Google Doodle' to mark his birthday, if you have not seen it already.

It's only a minute and a half, and you should be able to see it on your connection, even though I know you have a bandwidth problem.

  2. M.O.R., that's for Google UK. I had to go looking for it. I've embedded it and the linked video, which is one of my favorites. Hard to believe it created so much fuss when it first aired in the US. Of course, it's age-restricted on Youtube. "Sometimes a video doesn’t violate our Community Guidelines, but may not be appropriate for everyone." Pah.

My musical world stopped sometime after I got out of high school. (Never been really 'into' music.) I was working as a tech in the art department computer lab when Freddie died. I went into work and said, "Freddie Mercury died." And the instructor I worked under and two or three of my students said, "I know."

It was very quiet in the lab that day.

  3. It's no longer just Google UK,it was there when I jumped on the net this morning.
Freddie mercury was an incredible artist and showman. He had a mind blowing 3.5 octave vocal range and the rest of Queen had the chops to back him up,creating an absolutely unique sound that was theirs alone and Queen is one of the few groups with the power to literally bring me to tears with the power of their music.
Freddie loved life and lived it to the fullest and he is missed.

  4. Never gonna be one better, bottom line the man knew music.. writing it...singing it hell even knowing what people will like even when others don't. A one in a life time talent, which is missed in music to this day and beyond.

  5. There was a long time where Queen's record catalog was not available on cd. I guess some legal mumbo jumbo.

We had to go find pirated copies of the Queens albums (and Prince's Black album) at a college music store an hour away.

Great musician, saw some of his clothes at the Rock n Roll museum when we visited Cleveland. I guess I only really knew his voice and not his flamboyant dress.

  6. The Google Doodle was up on google.ie and .co.uk a day before the US (they took into account the timezone differences).

Yeah, the guy was just genius, absolute genius. There will never be another like him, even if there have been many pretenders.
