Spinosaurus

I'm currently finishing up issue #7 of Stormfront, things are finally moving forward. I should be done either today or tomorrow. I also just finished the 5th cover for the next Anita Blake series, but I can't post the images until they appear in Previews so it will be awhile until I can show you. So here's a new Spinosaurus from the dinosaur blog.

Best,

Brett

  1. You know, I had a toy Spinosaurus as a child, and it looked like an Allosaur with a Dimetrodon fin stuck on. Whe I saw an actual picture of Spinosaurus, I was kind of shocked at how wrong the toy was -- the other dinosaurs in the set were pretty accurate and above-average for dinosaur toys. The actual dinosaur was so unique-looking.

  2. Is Stormfront related to the The Dresden Files books?

  3. Hi Pai,

That was the original idea of what Spinosaurus looked like. I actually drew on like that:

The actual animal seems to be a large fish eater, with a delicate snout, very unlike the Jurassic park animal.

    Christopher,

Stormfront is the first book in the Dresden Files series:)

  4. That's interesting -- was there no complete skulls found for a while after the first fossils were discovered?

  5. Hi Pai,

The original fossils found Africa in the 20's (now destroyed in WW2) consisted of the front part of the lower jaw, a few neck bones and then most of the back, including the spines. There wasn't a skull known of any related species until Baryonyx was discovered in the 80's, so they just assumed it looked like other theropods. There is another theropod with a much smaller sail called Acrocanthosaurus (it's on the holiday image) and so they based Spinosaurus on that one for awhile.

Africa never gives up it's fossils easily, unlike N. America and China. All they have of the current skull is the front up to the nostrils. But it seems to be closely related to an animal in S. America called Irritator, similar tooth count so that's what the new skulls are based one.;)

    Best,

    Brett
