Shut up and draw, dummy...

Yeah, well that ain't going to happen. Every now and then I will post something on evolution or paleontology, much to the chagrin of others. I do not believe in evolution, I know that it is a fact, just as the sun comes up every morning, the earth revolves around that sun it can be tested and proven. You believe in something because you believe it to be true but do not know for sure.

Science is the quest for truth, these truths are supported by facts. Testable, provable facts. The Big Bang is a 'theory' like Evolution, they are both supported by facts, we do not as yet know what started the Big Bang but some have ideas, some of these ideas are pretty far out there but science is only a few hundred years old. We may one day know most of our universe. But hopefully not all, where's the fun in that?

Now for the question, should religion be taught in science class? It can't be tested, we can not prove any of it's claims. ID/Creation science teaches the book of genesis it true that is religion and this would be forcing religion on others. So, no, the bible should stay at Sunday school it has no place in the science class. I do think we should teach a comparative religions class at schools. With speakers from all sorts of different religions so everyone gets a well rounded idea of all the different beliefs of others.

One last thing. I keep getting told that "I'm a Christian/Catholic and I don't believe these ID/Creationist people, that's not MY version of Christianity." Well good! I hope these vocal few are the minority, but they are the public face of your religion. Why not get others like yourself together and get the word out that not all Christians/Catholics are the same! State your views so us non Christians and Catholics stop lumping you together! The Christian right needs to see a united front against there war on science.

This is my version of Spinosaurus, Until we get better fossils I'm not sold on the sail, Especially since this guy was found with other animals all jumbled together. So sometimes he'll be sailin' other times not;) So this is how I believe him to look;)

Garrr!!!!! I had this initial-post all done and everything. Then I closed the fricken tab and lost it all. Damn you Firefox! Well, here I go again.

The Vatican has condemned the Golden Compass as hopeless and without God (I'm paraphrasing here.) Get off your high and pointy hat, it's a FANTASY MOVIE, it's not real. And in fact,they do have a religion similar to christianity in the movie/book, and they do have a God in that religion. I don't really know why they are pissing about this. I think it's because the author is a known Atheist (gasp! Burn him!) Here's another revelation to some of you, so am I. I'm proud of. I was raised catholic but I saw the 'light'. Which brings me to what really pissed me off. This whole 'You can't have hope without religion'. WTF? When did this happen. I'm quite happy without some 'god' looking over my shoulder judging me. I don't feel the need for something larger than myself. I'm not hopeless, I have lots of hope, I just don't have this need for an afterlife. I hope to live past 70 with no real health problems, I hope the dogs are healthy, I hope Jess won't kill me in my sleep;) I hope Frankenstein does insanely well. See, I have hope I just don't believe what your selling, that's what's got your panties in a bunch. I don't have a problem with your religion as long as you don't foist your beliefs on me, but I'm not going to stand in the shadows while you insult me. I have influence over a whole 4 people here! Hahahaha! The Power!

On a side note, I want to say this. The Theory of Evolution is a fact. Those of you who don't accept this seem to keep dwelling on the word THEORY. Well, in science, a theory is something bigger than a fact, It has been proven correct over and over again. It consists of multiple concepts, it's the pinnacle of thought in science. What your getting confused on is that a theory to the rest of the world is actually something more like an idea or a base concept. in Science this is called a hypothesis. You make a hypothesis. You then test that hypothesis and if proven true, it becomes a fact. See it's a system that has proven itself time and again like evolution. Intelligent Design is just religion in disguise. They look at something and say that it's complicated and assume it's too complicated to evolve, someone or something must have designed it (ie; the Christian God.) Meanwhile others have looked at the same thing and said it evolved from this other similar form which came from another similar form and so on. We can test this through genes, and guess what, it works! We have tons of evidence for evolution, lots more than the average person will ever see, because these IDists/Creationists get on school boards and force the book makers to remove these facts from text books. Nice, lets keep everyone ignorant of the facts so we can promote our religion. Lets burn and ban the books that disagree with our beliefs so we can take control and now we'll bitch and whine when someone says something different. Help, help we're being repressed! You fuckers are in control now!!!!! And you've done a great job with the country;)

On another side note. What makes these Christian theologians so right? They stole the whole first book of the Bible from the Jews. Maybe we should ask them what it really means.

I almost decided to stay with DA but once again it is down. So in the effort to not waste my time.....Here's anther new sketch, a Tyrannotitan. I didn't like the older one I did. This ones head is based on other Charcaradontosaurs. If I spelled that wrong tuff cookies!

I was told that the announcement from my new book will be made the week after next. So until then here's a character design for another project. This one was the original design which has since been changed, but if you can figure it out, keep it to yourself.

Let's see, I wound up getting a former Boarder Patrol Tahoe. It drives great out here.

I've got 3 walls up on the house. I'm hoping for the other one this weekend. It's too cold today so I'll get some work done. Exterior doors are heavy.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Sorry about the no posts lately but I've been busy, lots of dog related problems. I'm starting on the house this weekend, I'm also looking for a cheap 4x4 with a SMALL engine. It costs me 30.00 just to get groceries with the van. So if you know of any let me know. I'm looking into some more solar panels too. The Power!!!!!!

Let's see. Well, I'm no longer working on Anita Blake, basically I didn't want to work with Marvel on this book, I know they will destroy it. They do good superhero comics but this needs a different touch and I don't think they have it in them, the new 'Zombies' variant cover proves this. Marvel is NOT a white knight coming to rescue, they saw the success of Anita and Sworn Sword and wanted them, so they took them. Nice. I chose not to be a part of this, it felt wrong. Jess will still be doing the writing adaption. I had offered my services for covers and stuff but as the new cover shows they REALLY don't like me right now. Oh, and Anita is supposed to have larger thighs, perhaps if you read the book you would know this as opposed to bitching about it. If you want little manga boys, you best try Japan, even the mangaesque artist in the states draw more regular looking thighs. As you can tell I'm in a bad mood today, don't know why. I might still be doing posters and T-shirts for Laurell, so that will be nice:)

I've started working on my new project, still can't say what it is, they want to do official anouncments and everything and that takes time. It will not be Backlash so stop asking. I have had NO contact with Wildstorm/DC Comics in years. Wildstorm just canceled Stormwatch... again, I doubt they'll bring back BL. I keep waiting for DC to just absorb WS but it hasn't happened happened yet.


EDIT: I've just found out that all the Marvel Zombie covers are supposed to be homages. This is fine....but you should still give credit to the original artist, it's just a nice courtesy.

Bacause you demanded it!

This was part of the first cover to the new project, but we've decided to swap this guy out for another character. All will be announced soon. Most likely in a few weeks, we want to get the cover done and colored and some pages to show off. The script is being worked on right now.

I'm actually working on designs for 2 projects the other will be out some time after the first. This is a project that's very near and dear to me so I'm really excited about it!

Jess will still be doing the adaption. I've started on a new project, the first cover is done. I'm just waiting on the script. So I should have it next week. Until then, I'm trying to get these blasted commissions done!

Everyone is under contract with someone. So for a brief time I was going to do roughs like this and we'd find someone else to do the finishes. So if you're feeling artsy go ahead and try;)

My all time favorite DC guy. A long time ago Jim Lee was talking to DC, and they were going to get Stan Lee to do a sort of heroes reborn thing in the DC universe. Jim called and asked which book I'd like to do if it happened, and I said the Flash! Well guess what never came to fruition;)

I don't quite have a handle on him but I doubt I'll ever draw him again. DC doesn't know who I am and I'm pretty sure I've been black listed (they just can't take my coolness;))

I have been a Mac user since 1988. Back then all we had were wood-burning Macs.

No, really, I used a Mac SE, with no internal hard drive and a whopping 1 MB of RAM. If you wanted to save something to your own floppy, you had to swap out the program disk. (Yes, a program would actually fit on one 800k floppy. System 7.5 was the last Mac OS I really, really liked.

So I thought this was pretty cute. So sue me.

Spinosaurus

So it's beginning to look like this animal never really existed, at least in this form. Apparently the original fossil material belongs to 3 different animals (gee I said this in like 2001 and was totally ignored.) I never agreed with the sail, it virtually identical to the sail backed hadrosaur Ouranosaurus. Some of the neck bones look similar to Acrocanthosaurs (and a juvenile one to boot!) and then another larger adult theropod finishes off what they had (it was all destroyed in WWII.) So you have 2 meat eaters and a plant eater making up this bad boy.

It was cool while it lasted.

What is it with these tiny cameras?

Why do people like tiny things so much? Tiny phones, tiny dogs, tiny cameras. I hate to buy something so small that one of the dogs could easily eat it. Cell phones? Too small. I suppose the ones that fold are okay, but we have the cheapie Nokia Tracfones and I hate them. If I put the thing close enough to my mouth so that Brett can hear me, I can't hear him. I have to remember to put it back in it's little case that hangs on the wall or I'll put it down somewhere and lose it. We don't have phone lines out here so we have to have the cells, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.

Which brings me to cameras. We have a seven year old Agfa ePhoto. It was cheap ($200.) It doesn't have even one megapixel. It takes crap pictures. But I've never had any problems with it. Late last year the card reader I use for it's smartmedia card died. We've tried four other readers and none of them will read the card. It works fine in the camera. I've come to the conclusion that the card is so old and so small (2 MB) that the current crop of readers can't read it. I can't get a USB cable for the camera, so it sits, collecting dust. And so in the interest of taking pictures of the dogs, we got a new camera.

This one is also cheap ($100.) It's a Fuji Finepix A500. The camera I really want hasn't shipped yet and I needed one to tide me over and after much reading of reviews, this was it. The A500 has a 3x optical zoom, which is cool, you can mess with manual settings, which is cool, it has a decent macro, which is cool, and it takes video with sound, which is also cool. It's shiny. But the thing is about four inches long. There's nowhere to grip it. Everywhere you put your fingers you cover up something you need, like the viewfinder or the zoom button. I have tiny hands and I can't hold the thing so it isn't horribly awkward to use. Stupid, stupid design. Is it really necessary to have such a tiny camera? It can fit in a pocket or any purse you care to carry with room to spare, so why so tiny? Because it's cute? Phooey. What happened to functional design? Or are we so used to compromising functionality in order to have cute, tiny things that we don't notice what a pain in the ass it is to use?

What do you feed your pets?

I'm sure we've all heard about the pet food recall. I don't watch much TV, and rarely the news, so I've gotten all my news online. Scientific American has a pretty decent article about the recall here. For complete coverage check out Pet Connection, and the self-reported numbers they're getting.

You know what's really sad? The people whose pets got sick before the recall, went to the vet, got better, then came home to eat the same damned food. And then died.

So I'm hoping to scan some more stuff later today.

But until then, this is for the animal people book I'm workin' on. I have different types of animal people. From Centaurs and Fauns to more traditional Werewolves. This guy is on the more human side. He still has some animal qualities, he's covered in short hair, he has a tail and claws. Since I draw on my own boards and have to cut off about 3 inches from each page, I wound up with a ton of 3 inch wide strips of board, so I decided to do a bunch of smaller thin shots for the book, like bookends. This is one of them. He walks on his toes cause he's part Puma, thus Puman.

He's wearing manpanties because it's very hot were he lives, plus he has fur so he doesn't get cold that easily. Since Freaks! wasn't matuer readers material, I decided to keep this on PG as well, so if your looking for bits, you'll not find them here, Gar!

If you notice he's very similar to the changeling woman I have on Deviant Art. I did that on purpose. I hate wasting designs so if I do decide to do a story with these guys I have some background guys already designed.

I did the more traditional Minoan head on him. With the longer face and horns turned up. He was done on 3 pieces of 3 inch board and slapped together in photoshop. Jess cleaned him up for coloring. I hadn't done a Minotaur yet so here he is.

So the show was pretty small, I did some signing s and that Marvel panel. I was asked a whole 2 questions! I did finally get to meet the Dabel's in person, along with Derek, Matt and Sean. Matt is quite the character, the dynamics of the group is quite interesting. I got a stomach bug from someone so I didn't go out with them on Saturday. The fricken dinosaur section of the LA NHM was closed!!!! I was not happy.

One of the Marvel guys asked me to do a sketch as a prize for something or other so I did this up real quick, it's of Spider-man. This is the first sketchy thing I did at the con. It would not be the last. I did some JLA chick who's a magician. Fathom, a few Backlashes, a lot of Anita's and Jean-Claude's. Some guy who wore a costume, Black Canary, a Vamparella and Anita and various other characters. I got to come home and immediately do another cover for the Anita Blake special. So I'm trashed right now. Hopefully I'll get some stuff scanned. If your interested in original Anita art let me know Derek Ruiz is selling that stuff for me.

I did get to See Ryan Benjamin, Sandra Hope, Alex Garner, Sean Chen, Humberto Ramos and Ryan Otagawa. So that was nice. because I got sick I didn't get to go to In and Out so I'm REALLY pissed about that! Most of the Fans were nice (Hi Bree!) a few were a bit pushy about me doing shows for or near them. The fact is we're not completely set up for me to leave for long periods of time yet so until I am I'm not going to do anymore. I'm hoping to get set up later this year, but with me doing Anita and Palatine and commissions I don't know when that'll be. And if I do do another show I won't be doing anymore sketches, it just takes WAY to much out of me, I'm not a machine.

Signing times

Brett will be signing at the Marvel booth from 4:00 to 5:00 on Friday and 2:00 to 3:00 on Saturday.

Now I'm doing a panel at 3 on Friday and I'm doing a signing/sketching or something like that, at the DabelBrothers table sometime on Saturday.

Anywho here's a quazi colored shot of a Neanderthal man. Some researchers theorize that the reason there a red haired caucasians is due to interbreeding with Neanderthals. That that's were the genes come from. It's a neat idea but we'll have to see were the DNA leads.

For some reason (It was printed on a bristol stock not traditional comic cover paper, bristol absorbs ink and make a big 'ol mess) this wound up not looking the right way for the sketchbook cover. It was lightened and the color shifted to blue. It's not a big deal but the red is a bit too washed out for me. So here is the original in all it's black and white goodness. Enjoy:)

I should have an actual signing schedule soon. This is just the preliminary times. I'll post the actual ones when I get them. I was told on the phone Anita panel on Friday from 3-4 and then a signing at Marvel's area from 4-5.

I'm doing a signing/sketching on Saturday at the Dabel's table sometime around 2-3. And then another Marvel signing at 4-5.

Oh and that's not really me, I used a photo I found at pazsaz.com and through wizardry and spooky powers, created the image you see here. Don't worry, no pencils were harmed in the making of this image, just all the people. They were eaten...well, I needed to feed my dogs, plus I was hungry (the little ones are REALLY good.)

In the hopes of putting me further behind schedule, Marvel and DabelBrothers are shipping me off to LA for the Wizard con. So I'll be at the con on Friday and Saturday. I'm supposed to sit in on a Marvel panel, so come and observe me stuttering and using big words that even I don't understand. Honestly I don't know what the panel is about and since I don't keep up with the world of comics I don't know what great nuggets of wisdom I can contribute. I'll be going to the LA museum of Natural History Saturday morning so I might be a tad late for whatever they have planned. I did a cover (and some sketches) for a sketch book and I think we'll have prints available too. I'll be happy to sign comics, books and anything you have laying around as long as the ink will show:)

I've been warned by Laurell K. Hamilton about some of her fans, and biting and licking were mentioned. I don't like biting, I'm very tender, but licking might be fun, just don't tell Jess. Seriously I have cooties so I'd stay back at lest ten feet. It's not the good cooties (you know the one without the claws) so I've very contagious. I'll be wearing some kind of shirt and pants, I'm not sure about shoes but since I've been informed I have ugly feet (I don't know how Jess can tell because all feet are ugly) I'll most like wear shoes... or maybe pumps, you know, to make my calves pop. Oh and maybe a badge that says 'Obey' or something equally clever, I'll have to think about that. Maybe just 'Do as I say.' I'm between 5 feet and 7 feet, I sometimes have glasses on, but sometimes I don't. I have sort of light dark hair. I'll have a short beard or would that be long stubble? I hate to shave. My turn ons are panties, (not to wear, I'm not weird) just to eat. My turn offs are of course feet and sheep. But I digress. I look forward to not looking up at you and of course hurting my back so you can have a signed comic. I also want to thank you in advance to whatever illness you will inflick upon me, you know who you are!

In all honesty I haven't done a panel in over 10 years so nothing to hard and no math, unless it's stuff easily divisible by 10. Only questions that I know the answers too will be answered and for the love of whatever deity you worship don't get me started on religion or dogs, I'll never go home.

Oh and before each signing I'll need everyones left shoe, not to keep just to make things difficult. Oh and I'll need In-and- Out. 2 Hamburgers mustard only and a order of fries, no shake, that must be procured from Carl's Jr. I'll also need some sort of posse. I need a big tough guy a hot babe that won't let me touch her and someone to laugh at my jokes. If you fit the bill email me.

Amazon Woman of Europe!

Just a teaser post. Not the one I wanted to do, I still need to scan a picture or 2. But I did this up the other day (the tones) in an hour or so while waiting for Jess to do the dogs food. She's just made her kill and looking for more. 80% of a Neanderthal's diet was meat. My kind of people!!! The spear point is wrong, I stupidly put a clovis point on it and it should just be fire hardened. But it looks cooler this way;)

Dinosauroid!

So I was toying around with the idea of the evolved dinosauroid first invisioned by Dale Russell. The dinosauroid was based on the idea that dinosaurs did not go extinct and what would one species possible evolve into? In the original case it was a troodon. But I decided to leave the mammals alone and have the dinosaurs coexist with them. So if the dinosauroid did evolve what interesting and new thing could I do? Well I decided on a sort of human mimic like the movie Mimic. Something that looks similar to a human from a distance but once you're in close...

So I took a basic deinonychus, I changed feathers to hair and kept the neat tail. It looks more human than the original dinosauroid and is a little more current since he has feathers. This was for an idea I had with some neato Neanderthals, and both the dinosauroid and the Neanderthals were shape-changers! Spooky yes? It's kind of like the origin of the lycanthropy mythos I so love. Of course I wrote nothing down and have forgot most of it so it's just a sketch now. I do that a lot:) I do have some more stuff that I drew, maybe I'll get to scanning it and posting it.

Jess is making dog food so I can't work (the dogs get spazzy and smash into everything, but it's usually my drawing table; which, while I draw on it, is just a table.) I'm planning on watching stuff on the Science Channel tonight. Psych was renewed for a second season, as was Eureka. Scifi Channel's been playing Special Unit 2 on Fridays which I find quite funny. I don't watch Heros, just don't like the superhero stories that much anymore. I might be going to a few cons this year. If things get finalized I'll post info. I hate to fly, I get intense pain in my inner ears (and no chewing gum does not help) so any plane ride is a bit like mild torture.

The thylacoleo, or more commonly know as the marsupial lion, is thought to have gone extinct 50,000 years ago. As you can see they have an odd dentition. They don't have the typical fangs of a predator. They have enlarged incisors like a rat, but the premolars have evolved into shearing blades to help take meat off the bone. After doing some research I found some 'descriptions' from a cryptozoology site. Now I'm not saying the possibility of these things surviving doesn't exist, I'm saying it's slim. But from what I found, they are said to have sort of a reverse pattern thylacine and be either grey or yellow. As you can see we chose white!

I've wanted to do one of these guys for years but only recently got the reference for it.
