Geeks Vs the World

I am a geek. I don't read comics, I don't role-play, and the closest I've come to being a gamer is owning an Atari 2600 and watching my mother fall off the couch with hysterical laughter every time the little guy in Circus Atari fell splat! and his head went all flat. But I am still a geek. Most of my reading material is scifi or fantasy. I am still disappointed that Firefly got canceled, think that now is the time for a Pern movie (we have the technology, dammit!), and Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite shows. Both of my husbands have been geeks. I feel I'm part of the geek audience, even if I don't fall squarely into the current technology based definition of the word.

I have not seen Scott Pilgrim VS the World. I don't ever leave the house, so it will have to wait until DVD, though I posted the trailer some time ago because I thought it was cute and looked fun. I also don't let reviews decide me on which movies to see, and generally don't read reviews of any kind at all, unless I am definitely not planning on seeing the movie. But I quite enjoyed this article by Linda Holmes on NPR, regarding how Scott Pilgrim is being reviewed:

I also think it's so heavily stylized that it's bound not to be everyone's favorite film. It's not aiming to be liked by all; it's aiming to be adored by many. If director Edgar Wright weren't okay with the film's being polarizing, he'd have backed off from some of its delightful little quirks.
But I have to say to those reviewing it: what's completely unnecessary is being hostile and condescending about the target audience — and I can say that, because I'm emphatically not part of it.

Emphasis mine. I think anyone who reviews anything should read her article. I stopped reading comic book reviews a long time ago, when they stopped being about the comic itself and started being more about how much snark the reviewer could pile on the creators. For some reason, certain people are incapable of separating "I don't like it" from "It's incompetent/horrible/shouldn't have been made/etc." They've become incapable of stating why they don't like something without being insulting. Hostile and condescending are the right words. Read the whole thing.

Both of these are from Fail Blog. The first is from that gem of a human Glenn Beck. Silly Glenn, we'd all be dead on Thursday, can't you see the X's on the suns eyes? plus everyone's brain would have boiled somewhere Wednesday and Thursday. Or at the very least the fire would have killed us on Saturday. I think that nuke-Q-lar blast on Sunday is really just overkill...

Of course if this is specifically just for Glenn then I'm all for it. Hopefully this forecast wasn't done by the local people, it would have just rained:(

Doctor Who Music Video

Lately I've gotten in watching Doctor Who with Jess. We started watching the Last group of TV movies featuring the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. BBCAmerica ran a bunch January 1st so I've managed to see some of the episodes and since I'm a Catherine Tate fan it was all great fun. Last week they started the new season with a new Doctor, who is quite good as well. I saw this and thought it was... well, brilliant. It's a music montage of the Tenth Doctors run. with a bit of the Ninth and Eleventh Doctor tossed in for fun. Enjoy!

Star Wars Card!

Thanks to Barron for sending this to me. This was a card I drew back in the 90's. It's got Boba Fett! I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but this was fairly fun to do. I did have to buy several books for the right Fett outfit. Colors by Jess:)

Dinoshark Tonight!

Syfy channel has a new movie with super cheese in it, Dinoshark. It premieres tonight, so pop up some corn, grab a beer (or something stronger as these movies tend to truly suck!) and enjoy. It's a Roger Corman film so you know it will be bad!

I was around twelve or so when the first Tron came out. I remember sitting in an almost completely empty theatre with my friend Michelle, who didn't get it at all and kept asking me what was going on.

People are a lot more computer literate now.

Captain America Movie

I'm not a Captain America fan, he's far to blah for me, to good, to perfect. Sort of like Superman Lite. Anyways they are just about to cast the lead in the new movie. If Marvel does it right and makes some interesting changes it might be good. SO who would you want to see as Cap? I had thought about Sam Worthington of Avatar fame but someone on Scifi Wire mentioned Captain Awesome from Chuck. I think that would be a great choice, and might be able to capture a bit of the magic that Iron Man did. At least we know Cap. Awesome can do comedy;)

Anyways I did a quick sketch with a slightly modified costume yesterday. Enjoy!

In Honor of Legion...

I had hopes that Legion might be good, but alas, after the reviews I read... It looks like a dud ( I've read some really bad reviews of it.) I actually like religious/mythology themed movies so I was hoping this one would be the next Prophecy (NOT the mercury bear movie!) So I drew up a sketch of an older character of mine for the fun of it. He looks off a bit, I think it's because I tucked in his shirt.... Well, he's a fallen angel named Lahaitiel or something, I can never remember the spelling...

Demons Theme Song By Starlight Mints

I've been watching Demons on BBC America. The show is OK, I don't like the American teacher guy, he's a jerk, but the rest of the cast is OK. They only did 6 episodes, but what I really like is the theme song, which is what the youtube video is. It's just he music so it loads fast:)
